Silverfish

Silverfish

This insect spotlight focusses on the infamous silverfish. silverfish belong to what many consider the oldest and most primitive insect orders, Thysanura. These ancient creatures are about 3/4 inches long and feed on simple carbohydrates and proteins. Once they find a reliable food source they remain close to it. As some well know, silverfish consume fabric and paper products sometimes to extensive damage. Their favorite paper food consists of pages with glaze or glue on it, containing starch, casein, and glue. Their favorite textiles to consume contain plant origins such as linen, cotton, and lisle. They often attack clothes or books that aren’t often disturbed, so if you pick up old clothes or books and find holes, feces, and scales, you may have a silverfish problem.
